The Future of Human Longevity

For thousands of years, increasing human lifespan was little more than a dream. Today, advances in biology, medicine, computing, and artificial intelligence have transformed longevity from mythology into a serious scientific discipline. Although no one can predict exactly how long people may live in the future, the direction of research suggests that healthier and longer lives are becoming increasingly achievable.

During the twentieth century, life expectancy increased primarily because infectious diseases became less deadly. Exercise, nutritious food, restorative sleep, healthy body weight, social relationships, lifelong learning, stress management, and preventive healthcare continue to provide the greatest proven benefits. Future technologies are most likely to enhance—not replace—these foundations.

The future of longevity will also raise important ethical and societal questions. If people routinely live longer, societies will need to rethink education, careers, retirement, healthcare, and the distribution of medical resources. Extending life should ideally be accompanied by extending opportunity, independence, and quality of life.

Perhaps the greatest lesson from longevity science is that aging is influenced by many interconnected systems. Genetics, lifestyle, environment, medicine, psychology, and society all interact throughout our lives. Understanding these interactions allows us to make better decisions long before disease develops.
