Creatine – More Than a Sports Supplement

Creatine is one of the most extensively researched nutritional supplements in the world. Although it is widely associated with athletes and strength training, scientists have discovered that creatine plays a much broader role in human biology. Every day, our muscles, brain, and other organs rely on creatine to rapidly regenerate energy during periods of increased demand.

The body naturally produces creatine from amino acids, and it is also obtained through foods such as meat and fish. Once absorbed, creatine is stored primarily in skeletal muscle as phosphocreatine, where it serves as a rapid reserve for producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body’s universal energy currency.

The strongest evidence for creatine supplementation relates to physical performance. Numerous clinical studies have shown that creatine can improve strength, power, and the ability to perform repeated high-intensity exercise. Combined with resistance training, it also helps many people gain or preserve lean muscle mass, an important factor in preventing age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia).

Researchers have also investigated creatine’s effects on the brain. Because nerve cells have high energy demands, maintaining adequate creatine stores may support certain aspects of memory, reasoning, and mental performance, particularly during periods of sleep deprivation, intense cognitive work, or aging. While results remain mixed, this area of research continues to expand.

Creatine has also been studied for potential benefits in neurological diseases, rehabilitation, and healthy aging. Although current evidence does not show that creatine extends human lifespan, maintaining muscle strength and physical function is strongly associated with better healthspan and independence in later life.

For healthy adults, creatine monohydrate is generally considered one of the safest and best-studied supplements when taken at recommended doses. As with any supplement, people with kidney disease or other medical conditions should consult a healthcare professional before beginning supplementation.

Creatine is best viewed as a tool that supports exercise rather than replacing it. Resistance training, good nutrition, adequate sleep, and regular physical activity remain the foundation of healthy aging, while creatine may provide an additional benefit for some individuals.
