Vitamins and Essential Micronutrients

Macronutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, and fats provide the body with energy and building materials, but they cannot perform their jobs without vitamins and minerals. These micronutrients are required in small amounts, yet they participate in thousands of chemical reactions that keep the body functioning throughout life.

Vitamins support a wide range of biological processes. Vitamin C contributes to collagen production, wound healing, and normal immune function. Vitamin D helps regulate calcium absorption and is essential for healthy bones and muscles. Vitamin K plays an important role in blood clotting and bone health, while the B vitamins help convert food into energy and support the nervous system.

Minerals are equally important. Calcium strengthens bones and teeth, magnesium supports muscles and nerves, potassium helps regulate blood pressure and fluid balance, zinc contributes to immune function and tissue repair, and chromium plays a role in normal glucose metabolism. A varied diet usually provides these nutrients in sufficient amounts for healthy people.

As we age, obtaining adequate amounts of certain micronutrients may become more challenging. Changes in appetite, digestion, medication use, and reduced time outdoors can all influence nutritional status. In some situations, healthcare professionals may recommend supplements to correct documented deficiencies.

Multivitamin supplements are popular, but research suggests they are not a substitute for a balanced diet. Whole foods provide fiber, healthy fats, protein, and thousands of naturally occurring compounds that work together in ways supplements cannot fully replicate. Supplements are most useful when they address a specific nutritional need.

The best nutritional strategy is to build meals around vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, dairy or fortified alternatives, fish, and other minimally processed foods. These dietary patterns naturally supply most of the vitamins and minerals required for long-term health.

Micronutrients support every longevity strategy discussed so far. They help repair tissues after exercise, support healthy sleep, maintain immune function, and enable the countless biochemical processes that keep our cells alive and functioning.
