Protein and Healthy Aging
Protein is one of the body’s most important building materials. Every muscle, organ, enzyme, hormone, and immune cell depends on a steady supply of amino acids. As we grow older, maintaining an adequate protein intake becomes increasingly important because the body’s ability to build and repair muscle gradually declines.
Beginning around the age of thirty, adults naturally lose a small percentage of muscle mass each decade unless it is maintained through resistance training and proper nutrition. This age-related loss of muscle, known as sarcopenia, can reduce strength, mobility, balance, and independence. Preventing sarcopenia is one of the keys to maintaining a high quality of life later in life.
Protein provides the amino acids required to repair tissues after exercise, support the immune system, produce enzymes and hormones, and preserve lean body mass during weight loss. Combined with regular strength training, adequate protein intake helps maintain muscle while supporting healthy bones and metabolism.
Not all protein sources are identical. Animal-based foods such as fish, eggs, dairy products, poultry, and lean meat provide complete proteins containing all essential amino acids. Plant-based proteins from beans, lentils, peas, soy products, nuts, and whole grains can also meet nutritional needs when consumed as part of a varied diet.
Whey protein deserves special mention because it is rich in the amino acid leucine, one of the primary signals that stimulates muscle protein synthesis. For older adults who struggle to consume enough protein through food alone, whey protein can be a convenient supplement. However, supplements should complement a healthy diet rather than replace it.
Current research suggests that spreading protein intake throughout the day may be more effective than consuming most of it in a single meal. Pairing protein with resistance exercise further enhances the body’s ability to build and maintain muscle.
Protein is only one component of healthy aging, but it interacts closely with exercise, sleep, and overall nutrition. Together, these factors help preserve physical function, reduce frailty, and support independence throughout later life.
